Balance

Life is all about balance. Yin and Yang. Feng and Shui. To and Fro (but honestly, I don’t know what the world’s most envied hairdo has to do with this post). yinyang.jpgMack is a spaz, Beene has the energy of a small boulder. Mack is smart, Beene has the wit of a small boulder. Two extremes pull towards center and combine to make one perfect entity.

Without balance we would have no opposites. We would only know the laugh and not the tear. Without one, the other is meaningless. Without sadness what is joy but the steady state of monotony? Without Teen Wolf, what is good television? If you never do anything stupid, how could you ever feel smart?

That’s why Michelle and I have been together and happy for more than ten years: Michelle makes me happy, I annoy Michelle. We pull towards center and combine to make one perfect entity. I’m just doing my part.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day.

Where the Streets Have No Shame

I’ve written about U2’s downhill trend before, and I don’t mind doing it again. The last album of theirs that I own features a song aboutu2-the-joshua-tree.jpg beautiful days called “Beautiful Day” and another about elevation called “Elevation”. Despite the clever song titles, it has nothing on their 1987 release, “The Joshua Tree”, which had an entire National Park named after it.

Michelle and I were in California for the weekend, and if you ever have a chance to make it down to Palm Springs, make sure you stop by Joshua Tree National Park. We drove to the north end of the park and hiked the 49 Palms Oasis trail before driving from the north end of the park down to the south end. It’s an amazing place, with crazy wildlife. We were lucky enough to see some lizards and the guy from the Geiko commercials. He offered us pie and chips. For free.

The 49 Palms Oasis hike was crazy and led to an actual real-life oasis. You hike through the desert in stifling heat for a few miles and suddenly - out of nowhere - are all these palm trees, standing in pools of water. It’s absurd.

It was a beautiful day; we didn’t let it slip away.

Whistler: A Study In Image Repetition

I could go on and on about how amazing it is to live in Seattle and how awesome it was to spend a week skiing in our back yard at Whistler at the end of michelle2.jpgFebruary, but the bad thing about poor writing is that the only thing my words would do is ruin the image you have in your mind. Since the only thing I have time for right now is poor writing, I suggest you go read Jess’s post on the trip. All I’ll tell you is that it was amazing: great friends, great weather, great snow, and fresh tracks in fresh powder.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to see how many nearly identical pictures of the same mountains from slightly different angles you can look at before poking out your eyes, then this is the place for you. Michelle always makes fun of me for taking a thousand of pictures of the same thing, pointing out that it’s nearly impossible to go through them all later to pick out the best for our photo albums. Not surprisingly, it turns out she’s right: I find myself completely incapable of going through all the pictures from our trip carefully enough to pick out the best shots. On the other hand I did manage to remove all the blurry pictures from the album before posting, and I will triumphantly hang my hat on that accomplishment.

Enjoy. If you can.
